Pre-Surgical Guidelines
Your pet has been scheduled for a surgical procedure.
The guidelines below will help minimize the inherent risks of anesthesia/sedation and make the day go more smoothly.

General Post-Operative Instructions for DOGS

1.For emergencies for your pet after hours, please call: TBVS in Largo (727) 531-5752 or FVS in Tampa (813) 933-8944
2.Keep the E-collar on at all times for 7 days after surgery. This barrier is necessary to prevent your pet from over-grooming, licking or chewing at the incision site.
3.Pets must be kept indoors after surgery. Restrict activity for the next seven (7) days - no running, jumping, or playing. Dogs    must be leash-walked. No jumping into and out of vehicles or onto and off of furniture.  Restrict interaction with other pets in the household.
4. Your pet may be sedated or groggy this evening. Sedation may last 24 hours.
5. After 6pm Tonight,Feed about ¼ of the amount of food  that you normally feed, and small amounts of water, then resume to normal feeding tomorrow.  No special snacks or treats on the day of surgery.
6. Look at incision a couple times a day over the next 7-10 days – for signs of infection (redness, swelling, drainage). If you see anything suspicious, please call us right away.  Do not apply ointments or creams to the incision
7. Incisions are held together with sutures that dissolve on their own over the next 4 months.  On top of that is a skin glue that dissolves over the next 7-10 days.  It dissolves too quickly if it gets wet.  No bathing, licking, or water sports. Do not bathe or allow your pet to swim for 14 days after surgery.

General Post-Operative Instructions for CATS

5.Look at incision a couple times a day over the next 7-10 days – for signs of infection (redness, swelling, drainage).  If you see anything suspicious, please call us right away.  Do not apply ointments or creams to the incision.
6.After 6pm tonight, Feed about ¼ of the amount of food that you normally feed, and small amounts of water, then resume to normal feeding tomorrow.  No special snacks or treats on the day of surgery.
7.If the incision becomes dirty, gently clean with diluted cool soapy water and a cotton ball or soft cloth. Pat dry. Do not scrub or attempt to remove adherent discharge from the incision. Dressings and ointments will delay healing.
